Trauma is any experience that is deeply disturbing and distressing to an individual. Trauma can involve a wide range of topics, the most common being any physical, emotional, or sexual abuse that occurs during an individual's life. Trauma does not only stem from that, however, as accidents, natural disasters, a loved one's death, etc., can also be a trauma.

Sexual assault is any type of activity, physical or verbal, that a person does not consent to. 


Emotional abuse is very serious and unfortunately, very common. It is hard to detect, as most of the time, there are no physical signs of abuse. However, emotional abuse is severely damaging to a person's mental health, sometimes causing anxiety, depression, PTSD, and more.

Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome

Also known as PTSD, this occurs when an individual who has a difficult time recovering from a traumatic event. PTSD is most commonly seen in veterans, however, it is not uncommon that PTSD can stem from any situation in which a person experiences deep distress. 

Signs and Symptoms​

  • Intrusive memories

    • Mentally reliving traumatic event​ through nightmares, flashbacks, memories

  • Avoidance

    • Avoiding any situation that may remind person of event

    • Purposefully staying busy to not think of event

  • Changes in emotional & physical reactions

    • Person may remain in the body's 'flight or fight' response to fear  ​

    • Can lead to trouble sleeping, being alone, easily startled, and aggressive behavior
